A republic is a form of government in which "supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives". In republics, the country is considered a "public matter", not the private concern properties of the rulers.

"Republic Of India" is the official name of our country adopted on 26 January 1950. From 15 August 1947 to 25 January 1950 we were "Dominion of India". In Dominion of India, the British King was still the head of state!

Does that mean we were not fully free till 26 January 1950, the answer is no. Having a British Head of State doesn't meant we were under British after 1947. British Parliament gave independence two India in 1947 and created two nations India and "our best friend" Pakistan as two dominions. But also gave freedom to choose their own head of state which India did in 1950 and Pakistan in 1956. The dominion status was given because India didn't have any Constitution or rule book sort of thing to run the country. But when India brought up its own Constitution and President, we over threw the British imperialism and became a parliamentary republic.

Their are several countries around the globe which still have a British Head Of State( their queen) like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and 12 other also known as Commonwealth Realm. All these countries accepts British Monarch as their Head of State. They have Prime Minister(who is Head of Government) not President or King or Chancellor. Barbados recently revoked "queen" from being their Head Of State through a Constitional Amendment and got their first ever president.

No, the British cannot cancel our Independence
